In 1972, she was elected to the Texas House of Representatives making her the first Republican woman to do so.
In 1993 she was elected to replace Sen. Lloyd Bentsen seat in the US Senate.
She served on the Senate Armed Services Committee;
After moving to Dallas in 1978, she was announced senior vice president and general counsel of RepublicBank Corp.
Named temporary co-chair of the Republican National Convention
She was married to John Pierce-Parks from 1967-1969, but later remarried to Ray Hutchison in 1978.
